How often do you wash your towels? A survey from the UK reveals some shocking facts. When and why should you change them regularly?
There’s nothing better than wrapping yourself in a nice, big, fresh, fluffy towel after a shower. But when is the next time you wash it? New research from bathing experts Showers to You has revealed that over a million people in the UK only wash their towels once a year, even though freshly laundered towels contain 190,000 bacteria, rising to 17 million after just one day of use and reaching 94 million after a week.
According to the guide, towels should be washed after three uses, but 3 percent of UK residents surveyed by Showers to You only wash their towels once a year—that’s almost two million people. The research also revealed that “almost one in 10 UK residents surveyed (8 percent) only wash their bath towels twice a year, equating to over 4 million people.” A whopping third of residents surveyed “only wash their bath towels once every three months,” equating to more than 17 million people. According to the study, the most unhygienic when it comes to towels are those living in the cities of Leicester and Glasgow. They are the most likely to go the longest without washing their bathroom towels: More than four in ten (41 percent) residents in both cities admit to washing their towels every three months at most.
It’s important to wash them regularly because “towels absorb a lot of water and stay damp for hours, which is the perfect breeding ground for unwanted germs. That’s why towels should be washed after every third use,” says the health platform Health Line.
